Direct neutrino mass search
نویسنده
چکیده
With the compelling evidence for massive neutrinos from recent νoscillation experiments, one of the most fundamental tasks of particle physics over the next years will be the determination of the absolute mass scale of neutrinos, which has crucial implications for cosmology, astrophysics and particle physics. Neutrino oscillation experiments can measure squared mass differences but not masses. The latter have to be determined in a different way. The direct mass experiments investigate – besides time-of-flight measurements – the kinematics of weak decays obtaining information on the neutrino mass without further requirements. Here the tritium β decay experiments give the most stringent results. The current tritium β decay experiments at Mainz and Troitsk are reaching their sensitivity limit. The different options for a next generation direct neutrino mass experiment with sub-eV sensitivity are discussed. The KATRIN experiment, which will investigate the tritium β spectrum with a MAC-E-Filter of 1 eV resolution, is being prepared to reach a sub-eV sensitivity.

Neutrino Mass , Mixing and Oscillations
Neutrinos have been playing an important role in the evolution of our understanding of elementary particles and could have some signi cant impact on the evolution of the universe. We have strong motivations to search for non-zero neutrino mass both from theoretical and experimental aspects. Various observational data which are indicating the existence of neutrino mass and avor mixing are piling...
متن کاملDirect and Indirect Search for Dark Matter
Direct and indirect searches for dark matter (DM) particles are discussed. The search for a diffuse signal from DM annihilation in the Milky Way is presented using the atmospheric neutrino data from Super-Kamiokande-I, -II, -III. The analysis focuses on the model independent scenario with DM particles annihilating directly into pairs of neutrinos and antineutrinos. No signal contribution is all...
متن کاملSearch for Neutrino Mass and Dark Matter in Underground Experiments
In this lecture we shall discuss two central problems of particle physics and cosmology. The neutrino mass is one of the key quantities in grand unified theories, and at the same time candidate for hot dark matter in the Universe. Supersymmetry is regarded as the most natural extension of present particle physics theories. The lighest SUSY particle, usually assumed to be the neutralino, is the ...
متن کاملNeutrino Mass and Oscillations
The neutrino remains as exotic and challenging today as it was seventy years ago when first proposed by Pauli. What is known for certain about neutrinos is minimal indeed. They have spin 1 2 , charge 0, helicity -1, and exist in 3 flavors, electron, mu, and tau. Strictly speaking, only 2 flavors are certain: direct observation of the tau neutrino has not yet been achieved, but an experiment, DO...
متن کاملStatus and Prospects of Long Baseline ν Oscillation Experiments
We will start with a brief overview of neutrino oscillation physics with emphasis on the remaining unanswered questions. Next we will discuss results and status of long baseline accelerator neutrino oscillation experiments that are in a mature data taking mode, have just started or are about to start data taking. Then, we will present the next generation of long baseline experiments with a prim...
